At SunRise ranch we are very passionate about this American Icon and believe in a natural, holistic management of this majestic animal. With many people starting to look at what they are eating and adjusting their lifestyles to make natural and healthy food choices. Bison is that great/tasty choice, with the many nutritional and natural qualities, no growth hormones, no antibiotics and no animal by-products.

Research by Dr. M. Marchello at North Dakota State University has shown that the meat from Bison is a highly nutrient dense food because of the proportion of protein, fat, mineral, and fatty acids to its caloric value. Comparisons to other meat sources have also shown that Bison has a greater concentration of iron as well as some of the essential fatty acids necessary for human well being.

BISON or BUFFALO??? The correct name for the animal commonly called buffalo is actually bison. For students of biology, the scientific (genus species) name for this American Icon is bison bison. As the largest land mammal in North America, the male bison (bulls) weigh in the neighborhood of 2,000 pounds and the female (cow) at 1,000 pounds. This is especially remarkable since bison are grazers, who feed mainly on grasses. The male stands 6’1” at the shoulder, while the female’s height is 1 foot shorter. For being such a large animal it can run 30-40 miles per hour and can jump over 6 ft high.
